HOW TO: CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS FOR YOUR TWENTY-SOMETHING FRIENDS

Birthdays. As we get older we’re supposed to care less about our birthday. “It’s just another day.” “Oh I hardly even realized it was this week.” “It’s no big deal, just another year.”

Lies!!!!

Birthdays are little slices of magic. It’s a day where all your closest friends & family tell you how much they love you. So here’s a question, how do you show someone in physical gifts how much they mean to you?

I start with balloons. Go to your nearest Party Store (Cincinnatians – I suggest The Party Source in Newport) & pick up a boatload of colorful balloons. They are seriously $1 a piece & it’s the perfect way to inform every person your friend encounters (at work, at the restaurant, at wherever you are) that “Why actually, yes! It is my birthday!” thus spreading the birthday love as far as the eye can see. Also, I know from experience that it’s really fun to tow around a bunch of balloons.

The card: There’s not much better than a hand written card. Am I right? & you know what makes it even better?  Attaching it to,

The baked good: So for me, it’s easy. I drop hints to people all year about the kind of desserts I like. (S’mores!) (Icecream!) (Dark Chocolate + Peanut Butter!) (& it’s actually not hint dropping, I guess . Sweets are just always on my mind, heart & tongue). If this is your good friend, then you probably know what makes their heart skip a beat. If you’re having a brain freeze (no pun intended) (but kinda because I wanted to go make myself some ice cream after I started writing this section), go with something neutral & easy, like oatmeal chocolate chip cookies (my secret recipe coming soon). But let’s be serious: no one is going to be mad when you give them any plate full of baked goods, no matter what kind. Plus: birthdays are the one day a year where calories all equal out to zero. Soo….

P.S. Don’t worry about decorating the packaging– the balloons help brighten up the scene :)

The Beverages: As a good friend, you’re probably A) going to see this lucky lass or lad first thing in the morning (before work or at work). If that’s the case, you should greet them with their favorite coffee beverage (Ask the barista to write “Happy Birthday!” on the cup... they won’t mind!) (I know because I used to be a barista.) But if you’re not going to see them til lunch or dinner – you better believe its time to put a drink on your tab! Also – try to hint to the waiter that it’s their birthday. You’ll probably get a free dessert or embarrassing song out of it.

The Bill: On your birthday, you shouldn’t have to pull out your credit card ever. I’ve found the best way to ensure this is to divide the guest of honor’s meal amongst everyone who is with you celebrating. It’s easy to do for the server (take it from a former waitress) & it only adds a few bucks to each other ticket.

Sometimes you might want to add a gift: I’m trying this new thing that as people mention items during the year that they like, I write them down in a note on my phone. I.E. Jake: Set of kitchen knives.  Courtney: Be Proud Ohio T Shirt. Annie: Sunflower wine glasses. It makes it a whole lot easier when gifting time comes around. But if you’re late to the party, I also like the "let me treat you to a pedicure!" route.. because then you can benefit too.

& that’s my advice! Take it or leave it. Take one, take some, take none if you wish. Because, honestly, the truest friends will just appreciate that you remembered their birthday at all :)

& finally, to you, my two best friends who turned 24 this week & brought my mind to this topic… Have the happiest, most magical, most fabulous amazing year. I love you entirely.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TREATING YOURSELF

Like a lot of girls my age, I am trying to make ends meet. I juggle student loans, rent, utilities, groceries, bills + random expenses (& man do they pop up!) & I really love it. No joke! I love to pay for these things! I know that with every dime I spend I am building my credit, gaining my financial independence + establishing myself as an adult. But, still, sometimes I fantasize about a day when money won't be so tight.

What I want to tell you awesome YPs today sounds simple. While its super important to be fiscally responsible; While the two egg + salsa dinners are a smart go-to; While I definitely won't judge you for re-using dryer sheets; Every once in a while, it's important to treat yourself.

This is the tale of my only designer purse.

Let me take you back to 2011. I was a senior in college. I  had held 12 part time jobs since entering the work force (starting at age 10, mind you....you're talking to a former paper girl!). I was knee deep in the search for a post-grad job that utilized my hot-off-the-press college education. But, for me, applying for jobs + taking classes + two spring semester co-ops + seriously dating + trying to make everlasting memories... well it equaled out to utter mind-chaos. So, as an incentive to do it all, I promised myself the day I landed a full time, salaried gig I would purchase my first designer hand bag: a Kate Spade purse. (Side note, I was obsessed with Kate Spade's branding for Twirl  at the time.) (Still am.)

Countless applications & interviews later, I did get the offer. I was starting as a full time Receptionist that did part-time PR at an integrated advertising agency downtown. "But," I said to myself, "It's part-time PR. As soon as I have a full time PR job... then I'll buy the purse."

Fast forward 11 months: Communications Manager at my current company. "But," I said to myself, "I haven't proven anything! As soon as I am promoted.... then I'll buy the purse." Another year & a half: Senior Marketing + Communications Manager. I've marketed & organized over 45 successful events. "But, I know I can still do better... I can't get it yet..."

See, the thing is, I know you. I know you find a reason to come back to Magical Simplicity every day (Huge thank you so much for doing that by the way! I love you guys so much!). But that means somehow, in some way, you are similar to me. & guys, we were on a fast track to never owning that purse.

As you can see... I changed my mind :) What happened? A friend called me out as a perfectionist. (She was partially right. I'm a selective perfectionist.) (& if you've seen the trunk of my car, you know I selected not to be a perfectionist there...). But that put my head in a whole new place. A place where I realized I've been minimizing my accomplishments as "not yet perfect." & guys, I would never do that to someone else. So, why should I do it to myself?

Shortly after that conversation, I was visiting my sister in New York & we stumbled upon (Kate Spade) SATURDAY. I saw this purse the moment we walked through the door. Well, truthfully, I saw the classic leather edition - but my seasonal blush choice was on an end-of-season sale (Don't you just love Kate Spade colors?!?) (I especially love them for 50% off.) (Smirk emoji). I feel so pretty & so  cosmopolitan walking around town with this cross my body. & what I love even more is what it symbolizes: three years of real accomplishments. & myself, owning them.

What I want to remind you, my lovely, lovely readers, is that you deserve the purse. You deserved it a long time ago. You need to stop minimizing your accomplishments. You are a living, breathing slice of magic. It's time to start treating yourself that way.

I'll close out with a blooper because I'm certainly no perfectionist here :) & also, if you're wondering....

CINCINNATI'S COFFEE EMPORIUM [OTR]

Coffee Emporium. Really Good Coffee.
Mon-Fri 6:30a-8p / Sat-Sun 7a-8p

This post is o.v.e.r.d.u.e. I have been meaning to write these Coffee Emporium posts since I rebranded the blog. In fact, a lot of the rebranding for Magical Simplicity was  inspired at Coffee Emporium. I. love. Coffee Emporium. So much. There are multiple CE locations, so I want to spread these posts out. Each one has a unique personality. We shall start in OTR.

Coffee Emporium OTR is located on Central Parkway [map]. Conveniently one block away from my old office. I used to rack up major points on My Coffee Emporium Tab (you get a free drink every 12 drinks you purchase) (I have three waiting in my queue) because I stopped in every morning on the way to work & came back for a decaf refill (& a Donna's Gourmet Cookie) at lunch.

I consider Coffee Emporium the gateway to the rest of OTR. &, as such, it shines with OTR qualities. The baristas are awesome & hipsters. There are plug outlets in the ceilings. All of the furniture is perfectly mismatched. Local art colors all the walls. But it's not just local art -- Coffee Emporium is 100% local. I guess I can't say that - because the beans come from South America (see above). But as soon as they arrive, they're roasted at the OTR location & served on site. (& distributed to other CE locations across the city).

Because of the full kitchen in back, OTR has a delicious menu [here] & you better  believe that the ingredients are as local as they get. + every weekend they make waffles. Danggg guys, are they good! (Might they even give Taste of Belgium a run for their money?)

Coffee Emporium has a nice industrial feel. If you stay for a while you're going to see friends catching up, business meetings happening, people reading & working, this girl blogging. Its always a buzz of activity.

& it's all fueled by some REALLY GOOD COFFEE

IN PURSUIT OF MAGIC

For some time I have been searching for a tagline for Magical Simplicity. Remember that e-course I am taking by A Beautiful Mess? Well it really has been helping me focus on the branding of Magical Simplicity. Unfortunately, it's been really hard to describe what we do here in just a few words. Until I was wandering around West Village with Colleen during my long weekend to New York. She was showing me around town when a mural caught my eye. & in the mural was a tiny message.

"In pursuit of magic."

That's it. Magical Simplicity is living your life in pursuit of magic. & magic, well that's a state of mind. & your state of mind is controlled by your thoughts. So if you choose to look at everything as positive & magic & awesome & wonderful & lovely & fun, then one day you'll wake up & realize that's really your life. It's no accident that the universe sends us these tiny moments. It's just a question of whether you choose to pursue them.

P.S. Right after I saw this mural we walked into one of New York's Famous Cupcake Shops. Nothing is a coincidence.

HOW TO LONG WEEKEND IN NEW YORK CITY

Oh my goodness. Guys. Just under a week ago I decided to take a last minute trip to New York City to visit my little sister before she finished her co-op in the Big Apple. Colleen has been in the city since May for a graphic design co-op at American Eagle. Somehow - as always - time slipped away & when I realized I only had one available weekend to make this trip happen, I had to pounce.

Six days later I'm writing this post with exploding taste buds, exciting stories & a full heart. & a whole lotta new clothes...I have so many great things to tell you about NYC - I thought I should write them out in case you, like me, have an exquisite opportunity to travel to the most iconic city in our country & are looking for a few ideas.

Shopping

Everything in fashion starts here, guys. It was totally incredible to see. I'm so pumped to tell you that 1) Hats are totally in. I have three new ones to prove it. 2) Outfits are flowing. Perfect. Theres too much great food here for tight clothes. 3) High waist, or better yet, pant rompers are all the rage. 4) Heels & strappy sandals. Why don't I have either? Time to invest.

Street vendors: bring cash because there are street vendors everywhere. You know me, always wanting to have one-of-a-kind items, there is no better way to accomplish this than to frequent the stands lining Brooklyn  & Manhattan.
West Village: Home of NYU's campus. There are adorable boutiques all around West Village sprinkled with coffee shops & cupcakes everywhere you turn. My fave, The Market NYC. Cincinnatians out there - this is essentially The City Flea in an indoor setting. Amazing.
SoHo: Within walking distance of West Village is SoHo. Here the buildings were taller, the crowds were bigger & the brands were more well known. American EagleMadewellKate Spade SaturdayZaraNecessary Clothing... there was one after another & man did it feel like we tried them all.

Touring

Colleen said I couldn't leave New York without seeing some of our American icons. So as soon as I arrived I bought a $30 seven day unlimited pass for the trains (also called the subway, but the locals call it a train. Obviously I'm trying to act like a local). This is the same pass that is used for metro. I highly suggest you invest because even though I was only in town for four days, I would have spent WAY more money had I just added to this card as I needed it.

Times Square.Of course.
Central Park is huge. We came from the Upper West Side after brunch at Calle Ocho - headed straight into Strawberry Fields & then wandered over to the Boat House.
Brooklyn Bridge is an architectural beauty. They have a walkway just for pedestrians & an amazing view.
High Line:this is an old railway line in Meatpacking District that, rather than destroying, they made into gardens. It's over a mile long with vendors & incredible views. & I don't mean just a few plants.

BRUNCH ME

Brunch in New York is a thing. It lasts for hours & usually includes bottomless drinks. I'm obsessed. On Saturday we went to Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side & on Sunday we stuck to a local spot (Colleen lives in Brooklyn) literally called The Spot, American Bistro. You HAVE to brunch when long weekend-ing in New York.

Night Life

New York has interesting rules about going out. Some places won't let you in if you're wearing shorts. They can deny you if you don't have a good guy to girl ratio (luckily our ratio was 4 girls to 1 boy) (this is totally preferred). The bars stay open til 4 a.m. There are rooftop gardens. You have to finish the night at Artichoke Pizza. Trust me.

Foodie

At the end of my weekend I realized that we ate out every single meal. I'm not upset about it. I heard somewhere on the course of my trip that if you wanted to try every restaurant in The City & ate out every meal of the day, every day of the week to do so, it would take 200 years. All I know is this is some of the best food I've ever had. I think I developed new taste buds while I was here.

All in all, it was amazing. I flash-backed to Gossip Girl  scenes all weekend. & to quote Jay Z + Alicia: Concrete Jungle where dreams are made of, there's nothing you can't do. Now you're in New York. These streets will make you feel brand new, Big lights will inspire you. Let's hear it for New York, New York, New York!!

A trillion thanks to my not-so-little sister & her roommates who made my Long Weekend in New York soooo incredible. Xoxo, guys.
